Summary of the Cellphone Design Industry
Mobilephone design company is newly emerged in the phone industry chain. Its emergence is resulted from the reduced life cycle and the price war. Because of the rapid development cell phone application and of hardwares, the life cycle of cell phone is quickly shortened. Cell phones launched by the first half year may become obsolete in the second half year. And the fierce competition makes the price war to be main-stream. Manufacturers can only rely on the new type on cellphone to make profits. Each time the price cut has been accompanied by the introduction of new cellphones, if no new phone is available, manufacturers can only rely on “advertisement bombardment”. But the latter way brings about less profit than the former one. As a result, manufacturers have developed a dependency upon new types of cellphones. However, a medium level R&D team of 50 members (most domestic manufacturers' R&D teams consist of less than 30 people) can only produce one new type of cellphone at most---the improvement of R & D teams is far lagged behind the pace of market demond.
Chinese cellphone market has a large capacity. It is out of question to consume 400 new-type cellphones(actually, 800 new types will appear on the market each year).in the year 2006, cellphone design companies can only produce 100 new-type cellphones. Therefore, the growth potential is great.
Domestic mobilephone design industry was initiated by the establishment of the first professional design firms dedicated to the cellphone design by CLP dragon in 1999. Before 2006, mobile phone design industry was monopolied by Korean and Taiwan enterprises. The year 2002 saw the largest registration number of cellphone design companies. But it was not until the latter half of 2006 that their products were approved and accepted by Chinese consumers. From 2004 on, domestic manufacturers began to play a leading role in the mainland design market. The number of Korean manufacturers has been greatly reduced, and only a small number of Taiwan ODM still has some market share. And the current design of the phone model profitable from the 2002 pandemic sweeping paradigm shifts to the part of the way.
Currently, China has about 30 to 50 cellphone design companies, among which and CLP are the largest. CLP has developed 22 types of cellphones and its sales record in 2006 hit 7 million. Other large cellphone designers are Zhongdian Aosheng, Shenzhen Wanzhong Communication, Shanghai Yuhua, Zhejiang Huali, Zhongxun Runtong, Shanghai Yumeng, Shenzhen Jingwei Tech and Shanghai Longqi. 50 types of cellphones were produced by them, with a sales record of 5 million.

The Instructure of Cellphone Design Industry
In 2002, some domestic cellphone manufactures tried to directly purchase complete cellphone molecules to produce cellphones, and then add shells, etc. cellphone functions could not be modified or be modified only a little bit. In this way, cellphone manufacturers had little room to perform their innovation.
In 2006-2007, handset design companies yielded good results in Chinese cellphone market in June. As each of the large semiconductor mobile platform is not exactly the same, even with the same manufacturer, provide a platform for different models, so the functions are not exatly the same. Most of the semiconductor manufacturers provide reference design together with the provision of chips. Many cell phone design companies first purchase a foreign cell phone design, and then do some research and study and modify a little bit. The the gradual mastery of their technology, they do more and more changes. And ultimately, they can provide customer-friendly products.
Most of the current total solution providers have various function-design capacity (such as GPRS, camera function, large-capacity storage, etc.), but some of the demand for special functions (such as search, positioning, etc) can not be solved by all design companies. Also there are some technical and artistic bottlenecks to overcome concerning exterior design. And the production side is also a problem for many design companies.
The companies able to provide chain design services basically are only the few largest ones. These enterprises have the capability to launch its own brand of mobile phones, because they have mastered the whole process of handset design and production. If they can find the partners with strong marketing capabilities, they can produce mobile phone of their own brands.
Judging in the perspective of the structure of China 's major cellphone design companies, most of their technology comes from R&D teams of foreign cellphone manufacturers. Foreign invested companies take fairly large proportion in domestic design cellphone companies. For example, CLP, Tak Sun wireless and Jingwei technology are invested by Intel. With a relatively low marketing costs compared with their competitors (the main competitor are from Europe, the United States, Taiwan, and South Korea), their gross profit margin is much higher than that of mainland mobile phone manufacturers.
Mobile phone design companis furtherly extend upstream for phone software design companies, cell phone component design company, phone outlook design company and Production testing companies, including cell phone game software, MMI software, embedded software, Special application software such as J2ME and BREW. cell phone component design company includes mobile phone RF design. Some design companies only design MMI interface, such as Nanjing shift soft, and some only do exterior design, such as AXLE. There are even some other companies who only design embedded browser. Mobile phone design companies is responsible to integrate these resources together. A industry chain similar to PC software is emerging.
